Are you a young woman that has been diagnosed with cancer, and you think no one knows what it feels like to be in your shoes? Here is an event designed for women who ALL have been in your shoes at one time or another. The “Meet, Mingle and Learn” Young Survivor’s Open House is a free social and educational event to bring young women together who are surviving cancer.
This is the third such open house sponsored by the Beyond Pink TEAM in the hopes of connecting young women with cancer together. The “Meet, Mingle and Learn” Young Survivor’s Open House is Thursday, October 2 at the Cedar Falls Community Center, corner of 6th Street and Main. The Open House is scheduled from 4:30-7 p.m., but feel free to come and go as your schedule allows. This FREE event is open to all young women living with cancer. Discussion topics will include choosing health care, household and lawn care products that are safer for you and your family, as well as maintaining family connections while surviving cancer. There will be refreshments and door prizes. Andrea Wubbena, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 23, started out as a participant at previous Young Survivors events. She had a great time and connected so well with the other women, she felt compelled to join the planning committee for this event. “The Young Survivors Open House is like a breath of fresh air for me. It's a time I can truly be myself, where I know I am surrounded by women who have all had the same sort of experience. No matter what kind of cancer has affected us, we are all going through a life changing experience. We are learning to live with cancer while still being mothers, wives, career women....sometimes all three....and most importantly learning to take the time we need to care for ourselves!” Wubbena has now been cancer free for five years. “I am proud to be a part of this amazing group of women and hope to help plan events that can bring other young cancer survivors together to remind us that we are not alone.” Following the Open House, participants are encouraged to venture towards downtown Cedar Falls for an evening of fun and shopping as part of “Girls’ Night Out.” Participants may also choose to attend the “Celebrating Life with Laughter” event which is at Joker’s and features comedian and cancer survivor, Scott Burton.
