ACTION REQUESTED -
Please call or e-mail Representative Steve King immediately and tell him - I URGE YOU TO COSPONSOR THE BREAST CANCER AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH ACT! ACCORDING TO THE MAY 14 ISSUE OF "CANCER," ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE TO TWO HUNDRED CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS ARE LINKED TO DISEASE DEVELOPMENT. A THOUGHTFUL AND METHODICAL NATIONAL STRATEGY TO STUDY THIS ISSUE MUST BE DEVELOPED.

Call and leave the message at his Washington DC office:
Washington DC 202/225-4426
E-mail through the CONTACT section of King's website: www.house.gov/steveking

Background Information:
Iowa Senators Grassley and Harkin and Representatives Braley, Loebsack, Boswell, and Latham all support the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act. In fact, Representative King has supported this legislation in the past. We need him to sign on as a cosponsor now.

It is generally believed that the environment plays a role in the development of breast cancer, but the extent of that role is not understood. The National Breast Cancer Coalition and Iowa Breast Cancer Edu-action believe that this critical issue must be approached thoughtfully and methodically and that a national strategy for increasing knowledge in this area must be developed. The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act would create grants for the establishment of collaborative multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research centers which include community groups to study the potential link between the environment and breast cancer. Grants would be awarded based on a competitive, peer-reviewed process that involves consumer advocates.
